Volleyball goes 1-1 on day one

Teigen
The Wildcats volleyball team earned a split on the first day of play at the River Falls Invitational. They defeated Buena Vista University (BVU) in three sets (25-14, 25-19, 25-14) before falling to St. Olaf College in three sets (23-25, 21-25, 16-25).

The Wildcats quickly found their groove early against BVU. Coach Hess' squad jumped out to a quick lead in set one that created a tone for the rest of the game. In their three set victory, St. Kate's final tallies included 39 kills against only seven attacking errors, 35 digs and seven blocks. Sophomore Megan Ahlbrecht led the team's front row attack with 15 kills and 3 blocks. First-year libero Callie Teigen anchored the back row with 12 digs. Senior Whitney Sparby also played well, her 21 assists were an important part of the team's strong offensive attack.

After a short rest, the Wildcats returned to the court to face a St. Olaf team that they will see in conference play in a few weeks (9/19/08). Sets one and two were exciting back-and-forth volleyball, but the Wildcats were not able to find a way to win either set. After dropping those sets 23-25 and 21-25, the Wildcats got off to a slow start in set three and were unable to recover. The game ended  with a 16-25 set three loss for the Wildcats. Ahlbrecht and Maria Hoffman topped the team with eight and six kills, respectively. Teigen was again very active on defense with 13 digs, and Sparby had 11 of the team's 22 assists.

The Wildcats resume tournament play against  Bethel at 11:30am on Saturday and  wrap-up play against the host UW-River Falls team at 3:30pm.
